The NCAA’s suffocating rules

by padecky

Shawn Sumpter, Sarah’s mom, sent me a link to UC Davis’ rules site – teamaggie.com/rules.html. She did it to further illuminate how strict the NCAA is about contact with a possible college recruit.

Yes, the NCAA is strict. But imagine if you have to do it EXACTLY  the way NCAA wants. You will come across as rude, no question.

I will be quoting the rules under the heading: “What if a prospect approaches you?”

“The encounter may not be pre-arranged. You DO NOT engage in any arranged dialogue in excess of a greeting and you take appropriate steps to immediately terminate the encounter.”

In other words Prospect says to Mom of player currently at University: “How are you?”

The mom, basically, can say “Hello. Goodbye.” And then spends the rest of the night waiting for a phone call from Prospect’s parents saying what a rude person she is.

The rules, however, don’t say anything about smiling. Or winking. After all, is a wink a violation? Just wondering.
