Living the high life

by padecky

For Sunday’s paper is a column I wrote on Johanna Javaluyas, now in charge of hospitality at Moont Mountain Vineyard, once the travel coordinator for boxing superstar Oscar De La Hoya.

Javaluyas gave up the job after 15 months because of the constant pace, living out of a suitcase and never having a chance to do one of her loves, hiking..

Still…..

“I would have stayed,” I told her.

Javaluyas looked surprised. Why, she asked.

“Because Oscar has touched so many lives with his generosity of time and money,” I said. “In pro sports it is not as common as you might think. It certainly hasn’t been common in my experience.”

Javaluyas looked at me and with complete innocence she said, “Really?”

I had to admit I was jealous when she said that. A guy who built a school, added wings to a hospital, built housing for low-income families, yes, De La Hoya was an anomaly.
