Matt Tomlin, Piner’s head football coach, has heard all the rumors about Cardinal Newman recruiting players. His response?

“I laugh,” Tomlin said.

Tomlin, 33, has experience in that area. As a freshman at McKinleyville High School, Tomlin was a good all-around athlete. After his freshman year, Tomlin transferred to St. Bernard’s in Eureka and the accusations surfaced immediately that St. Bernard’s recruited Tomlin, who would star at St. Bernard’s as a quarterback and go on to play college baseball at Nebraska.

“I went to St. Bernard’s because it was a better situation for me athletically,” Tomlin said. “St. Bernard’s never recruited me. I did the same thing for the same reasons that kids go to Newman. Paul Cronin has a heck of a program. He has a great coaching staff. Kids go there because of the success the program, not because Newman recruited them. They move there to be part of that success, just like I did when I went to St. Bernard’s.”
